Liposome Delivery System Benefits
Topical application allows for the key ingredients to bypass the GI tract where as much as 80% can be discarded. Liposomes encapsulate key ingredients and have the advantage of consisting of lecithin and cholesterol, which occur naturally in the human body and provide good bioacceptability. Once absorbed they tend to accumulate in inflamed tissue where endothelial barriers break down, the nontoxic, nonimmunogenic bilayers of the liposome dissipate, thus making them an excellent delivery system for therapies targeted toward inflammation allowing slow diffusion of the ingredient into the targeted area. Topical administration allows for direct absorption to the area and does not suffer hepatic (liver) first-pass degradation. Because the stomach and GI tract are bypassed there is no gastrointestinal upset.
